COSBOA today congratulates the Government on their decision to adopt changes to Section 46 of the competition regulations recommended by the Harper Review. They have followed proper policy development process through consultation and consideration for the consumer and the entire business community.
In particular, COSBOA is aware that the Business Council of Australia and big businesses such as Wesfarmers have been placing undue pressure, indeed threatening, the Government on this issue. However, the Government has stood firm.
CEO of COSBOA, Mr Peter Strong says “It should be noted that COSBOA considers that the measures are not strong enough, but due process has been followed and we will work within the system and assess the impacts of the changes over the next few years.”
“The Government has recognised the importance of competition and due process and this result demonstrates that fact. The support of the Small Business Minister, Hon. Kelly O’Dwyer has been invaluable.”
Peter Strong acknowledged the support of the Master Grocers Association and many other organisations who were part of a Coalition seeking better competition needed to achieve this outcome.
