Small Business People are the Best Employers – So Where is the Respect?
COSBOA congratulates the Australia Institute and Beyond Blue on the report released today that shows small business workplaces to be the best in Australia.
Peter Strong, ampoule Executive Director of COSBOA said today “This report shows what we have always known – small business workplaces are the best workplaces for employees. This also highlights our concerns about the lack of respect shown to small business owners from policy makers, big business and regulators.”
COSBOA notes that more and more information is now being released that shows the small workplace is the best workplace. The report from the Australia Institute and Beyond Blue shows that small business employers are the best workplaces; statistics from Fair Work Australia show that only 20% of proven unfair dismissal claims are in small businesses (yet small business comprises over 80% of workplaces); and information from the Human Rights Commission shows that of the eleven million employees in Australia only 2200 people complained about discrimination and only 125 went to court.
Mr Strong added “In spite of all the information that says small business is the economic, ethical and cultural backbone of Australia we still have politicians, industry leaders and bureaucrats forcing appalling compliance and stresses onto our sector. If we received the same respect that we give our employees then maybe we could spend more time with our families.”
Mr Strong also added “One good example of the lack of respect shown small business is the collection of GST on overseas purchases. Businesses in other countries do not have to collect GST on purchases made by Australians from within Australia. In Australia the 2.5 million unpaid tax collectors, small business people, do have to collect GST. So why the support for foreign business and the continued need for Australian business people to work for free for the government?”
One important issue identified by COSBOA is the lack of focus on the health of small business people. The report from the Australia Institute and Beyond Blue, excellent as it is, does not give any information on the mental health of the 2.5 million small business people. This is a major issue and we hope that these organisations will soon complete a study into our sector and the health of our people.
