COSBOA’s CEO, Peter Strong delivered an address at the National Press Club on Wednesday, 1 July 2015, presenting the case that the Australian economy is being held back as too many decisions that affect the economy are made by too few people and institutions on behalf of everyone else.
Peter argued for a program of local economic development that empowers business people to influence the development of their smaller economies. If many small economies across the nation are managing change and functioning well then the whole economy will benefit.

Great speech to the Press Club! It was recommended to me by an economic development officer who was very impressed. I’m going to quote some of it too, as I’m helping the Canberra CBD Limited Group argue for better treatment for CBD businesses during the light rail construction phase.
Best wishes Kim

Tom picked up the address at National Press Club – very proud of what he had to say. Also has a story to tell, but recognises you may not have time to chat to him. He felt you really hit the nail on the head and that while it may not be possible to fix everything in his/your lifetime, you’re on the right track!
You may recall me speaking with you several times when I was struggling to survive in my small business when the Geelong CBD was gobbled up by Westfield. Westfield are really struggling to keep tenants, the CBD is now a derelict junk heap and no matter what Council squawk and carry on about, it cannot and will not ever be fixed. Most of the small businesses and strip shops have closed down and moved out. I got out of my lease over 3 years ago after a long fight and I moved on into the world of politics.
Watching you on the ABC at present. Congratulations and well said, you are brave enough to say what most Australians are thinking. Well done. Hope you are well and happy and best wishes.

Congratulations Peter. A great address. The audience shots suggested that they were listening.
Just writing to inform you that your Press club talk was the best I have ever witnessed. (And I am lover of exceptional history, the participants and speeches.) The subject matter was so wide and yet the analysis so deep I was flabbergasted at your understanding of the economics, its political implications and the resulting power concentration. I just wished you had been given time to go through it all!
I did not find one issue that I was at odds with. If I can ever help in anyway let me know.
