2.5 MILLION PEOPLE DESERVE BETTER
COSBOA is extremely disappointed that we will once again have a new Small Business Minister. The small business community is facing crisis, the number of bankruptcies are at record levels, the big landlords and big retailers are running amok across the Australian business landscape. We need certainty and continuity in the position of Small Business Minister to turn this situation around.
Peter Strong, Executive Director of COSBOA said today “We must have a real focus on the small business community. The constant changes in the position of Minister for Small Business adds nothing to our health and to our business planning. There are over 2.5 million in small business, we employ almost 5 million other people yet we do not get the attention we deserve. This must change.”
COSBOA has campaigned for decades to have a Small Business Minister in Cabinet. We got what we wanted but now we are campaigning to have consistency in the person in that job. Since the government was elected in 2007 we have seen Craig Emerson, Nick Sherry, Mark Arbib, Brendon O’Connor and Chris Bowen come and go as Small Business Minister. This has to change.
Mr Strong added “The Opposition has maintained consistency and continuity in their small business policies and people. For example we are unequivocal in our support of the opposition’s policy on contract law, a policy announced by Tony Abbott and championed by shadow Minister for Small Business Bruce Billson. Mr Billson has been the Shadow Small Business Minister for over 3 years and during that time he has been able to influence his party and restore it to the premier party for small business. He did this because of his commitment to small business, his commitment to his role as Shadow Minister and his stability in that position. His consistent attempts to change the process for paid parental leave is another example of his, and his party’s, persistence in attempting to make life easier for small business people.”
Mr Strong also added “Bruce Billson gets small business; he knows we are people. He knows there are some 2.5 million of us and we vote.”
