Big win for owners of small trucking businesses - about time too

By Peter Strong  ·  on 19 Jul 2012  ·  Share
Congratulations to the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) for a long sort after break in costs for people who drive their own trucks and maybe employ a few other people.

For a long time those in the transport industry have faced nothing but rising costs and now, for the first time in my memory (am I wrong?), we have a decrease in costs.  The decision is the abolition of stamp duty on new vehicle purchases in NSW and is something that was promised to Australian business and industry as part of the original GST reforms. I know that John Beer, National President of the ALTRA and Philip Halton, their Executive Director, are very pleased.  This has been at least two years in the making and hopefully other states will follow suit. The members of the Australian Logistics Council have also been part of this fight and also need to be congratulated. It is not often that costs for small business people are decreased.

It is interesting to note that Philip Halton and I met at the Tax Forum in 2011 and found we agreed on many issues and we and our members had many concerns in common.  I hope that being a member of COSBOA has helped in achieving this victory, but either way it is great to have an organisation such as ALTRA, and all their connections, as part of the fight for the rights of the self employed - Excellent!
